GW Men host VCU in clash of rivals
By: Jack Linnehan
The Smith Center gets whited out tonight as the George Washington Colonials (12-11, 4-6) host the visiting VCU Rams (18-5, 8-2). GW comes off a tough 84-75 loss at Richmond, but have been boosted recently by star play from Tyler Cavanaugh, averaging over 20 points per game in his last 4 games. For VCU, their most recent was an 83-77 overtime win at Saint Bonaventure surrounded by controversy. The Bonnies hit a buzzer beater to go up by 1, but with .5 seconds still on the clock the fans rushed the court. The Bonnies were (later ruled incorrectly by the A10) issued a technical foul, VCU converted the foul shot to tie, and then won in the OT period.
The key matchup to watch will certainly be the bigs of GW vs the bigs of VCU. The Rams tout redshirt senior Mo-Alie Cox and junior Justin Tillman, and their big bodies will provide problems down low for Tyler Cavanaugh and co. If Cavanaugh finds himself in foul trouble again, the freshman bigs of GW will have to step up to compete on the boards and in the paint.
VCU is riding hot, having won their past four straight games, and hold a 10-2 lead in the all-time series against GW. However, the Colonials have beaten the Rams at home before, and look to do so again in front of a sellout crowd. With everything to play for in a fierce rivalry atmosphere, give me the Colonials in a home upset.
GW – 79
VCU – 74
