GW MBB on the road vs Richmond

By: Daniel Stettin

The George Washington Colonials (12-10, 4-5) travel to Richmond, Virginia Saturday afternoon to take on the Richmond Spiders (13-9, 7-3). Richmond beat GW 77-70 at the Smith Center on January 8th in what was really a one-sided ballgame. TJ Cline led the Spiders that day with a near triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. Tyler Cavanaugh led GW that afternoon with 22 points and 7 rebounds.

Richmond is led by Senior Forward, TJ Cline. Cline is also the son of WNBA legend Nancy Lieberman and he is having an unbelievable senior year. He is averaging 19 PPG, 8 RPG, and 5 APG so he has been doing a little bit of everything for the Spiders this year. As well, they have a strong guard in Senior ShawnDre’ Jones. Jones has had a fantastic final year putting up 17.5 points a game. Richmond was able to dominate inside in the last matchup, evident enough from the 61.5% they shot that afternoon. So look to Richmond to go inside with Cline.

GW is coming off a back and forth 82-70 loss at Rhode Island. The game was tied at 69 late in the second half but Rhode Island ended the game on a 12-1 run to close out the Colonials. Cavanaugh played a fantastic game with 21 points on 8-14 shooting, a level of efficiency he really struggled with early in the year. The freshman have really hit that wall as they have all really struggled the past few ballgames. Look for Yuta Watanabe to get more involved as he has been quiet the past few games.

For GW to win this ballgame, they are gonna have to play strong interior defense and hit their three pointers. Richmond can beat you in so many ways but they are deadly inside so GW must emphasize this. As well, look for Jordan Roland to come out strong as he as been the Colonials best playmaker all season. We shall see if GW is able to fight off Richmond for an entire 40 minutes.

GW: 72

Richmond: 69
