MBB looks to rebound vs Duquesne 1/18/17
By: Joey Mamlin
GW: The Colonials look to end a three game skid by returning to the Smith center following a two game road trip. Coming in at 9-9 (1-4) on the season, this could be a big game in gaining some confidence heading into the back half of the season
Duquesne: Also coming off of a loss in their last game against Dayton, the Dukes will look to gain some traction as well, also sitting at 9-9 (2-3) for the season. The Dukes are a very young team, with four players in their first year averaging double digit scoring.
Preview: This is about as close to a must win for both of these teams as you can get from a game in mid-January, but with both teams season somewhat hanging in the balance, tonight could be a momentum changer for one of them. Duquesne is a team that get’s a lot of scoring from their backcourt, while GW tends to rely more heavily on a committee of forwards lead by Tyler Cavanaugh so it will be interesting to see how the pace of this game develops.
Jair Bolden– coming into this game after consecutive career high scoring nights, Bolden can really grab hold of the starting point guard spot with a good performance tonight against a formidable backcourt of Duquesne.
Mike Lewis II- The Freshman guard is leading Duquesne in scoring and will need to have a big game tonight on the road in an arena that can be a very tough place to play for young players.
Keys to the Game: If GW can get enough stops to keep Duquesne from scoring near their season average 71.6 ppg, the Colonials will put themselves in a position to win this game. Getting consistent guard play on the offensive side will also be crucial, as several guys have shown flashes, but none have been able to find sustained success scoring from the backcourt. GW needs to find a way to supplement what Cavanaugh, Watanabe, and Colin Smith are doing in the frontcourt to have a well balanced offensive attack.
Prediction: GW always seems to protect home court in big games so expect the Colonials to come out strong tonight, with Yuta being able to use his size to his advantage and having a big game. Colonials should get the win 66-60.
