GW WBB takes on #14 Stanford 12/21

By: Daniel Stettin

The George Washington Colonials (7-4) welcome the #14 Stanford Cardinal to the Charles E. Smith Center Wednesday evening as the Colonials look to get revenge on the Cardinal after they defeated the Colonials in Pal Alto last season 84-63.

The Colonials are coming off a tough 60-55 loss at South Dakota State where GW had a 15 point lead at the end of the first quarter. GW last beat a ranked team at home November 15, 2013 when the current seniors help upset #10 California. GW is on a two game slide currently since beating Illinois by 16. The Colonials are led by Senior Forward, Caira Washington. Washington is third in the nation in FG %, shooting 70.5% from the field along with her 7.5 RPG. With Stanford running essentially a 4-Guard lineup, Washington should be able to take advantage of mismatch in height to dominate inside.

That’s not to say the Cardinal do not have any size. While their starting 5 is relatively undersized, their bench is massive. They play 4 players that are least 6-3 and they all can prevent problems on the interior. The Cardinal are led by Senior Forward Erica McCall, who put up a double-double on the Colonials last season. McCall is putting up monster numbers, averaging 17 PPG and 8 RPG.

Stanford’s veteran squad will not be fazed by the Smith Center atmosphere. They start three seniors and are very experienced, the seniors for Stanford have gone as far the Final Four after reaching the Elite Eight last season. As much as I like to think the Colonials have an opportunity to upset the Cardinal, I see GW putting up one bad quarter and three great ones (similar to the game in Pal Alto last season), however the one bad quarter will cause enough damage.

#14 Stanford: 82

GW: 65
