WBB Preview vs American 12/7/16
By: Arthur Pescan
Fresh off a runaway home victory Sunday afternoon at the Smith Center, the George Washington Women’s Colonials (7-2) look to extend their win streak to five as they face off against the District rival Eagles (2-5) at American’s Bender Center tonight at 7 PM.
Sunday saw the Colonials trounce visiting Illinois, 72-56, in a matchup that featured GW reach a 29-point cushion at one point over the Fighting Illini. Such dominance has become characteristic of the season so far for GW, with the team averaging a whopping 17.5-point margin over opponents in their seven victories this season.
Going into the game at American, expect to see continued offensive prowess from senior guard Hannah Schaible, who has averaged 16 points per game and a shooting rate of 48 percent from the field over the past few games, as well as senior Caira Washington (12.7 ppg, 7.9 rpg). Defensively, GW should continue to excel in the trio of Washington, graduate student Lexi Martins, and junior Kelli Prange, who have had repeated success in protecting the paint, limiting opponents to just 33-percent shooting there.
Scouting the Eagles, junior Emily Kinneston has been the offensive leader for American, averaging 12.3 points per game this season, while senior Lauren Crisler has come in clutch on the boards, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game. They come off a disappointing loss Saturday to William and Mary, 48-34, in which American stumbled offensively and defensively, shooting only 31-percent from the floor, as compared to their season average 43-percent.
Though both teams put up similar shooting numbers, expect GW to come out strong given the Colonials continued use of their skills from the line and on the boards, where they are shooting 65.8%, and averaging an A-10 leading 45.6 rpg, respectively. Couple that with the fact that the Eagles have struggled against strong defenses so far this season, the Colonials look set to win the District crown (or should I say Presidency?) tonight. Tipoff is at 7 PM, and WRGW coverage will begin at 6:45 PM on gwradio.com.
