GW MBB Preview vs FSU 12/4/16

By: Daniel Stettin

The George Washington Colonials (5-3) face the Florida State Seminoles (6-1) Sunday afternoon in the Verizon Center as apart of the BB&T Classic. The Colonials are coming off a thrilling one point win over USF yesterday afternoon with Freshman Center Collin Smith hitting the game winning 3 pointer with just seconds remaining. FSU is coming off an 8 point victory over Minnesota at home as apart of the Big 10/ACC challenge last Monday.

Collin Smith is coming off his best game as a Colonial, scoring 22 points and grabbing 8 rebounds as well as 4 steals. Smith is going to face quite the challenge in FSU Center Michael Ojo who is an astounding 7 foot 1 and 305 pounds. Patrick Steeves and Yuta Watanabe are expected to miss this game with injuries. Starting in Watanabe’s place is expected to be Freshman F Arnoldo Toro. It’ll be interesting to see if Coach Joseph goes with a larger lineup with FSU expected to have 3 players at least 6 foot 7 in the starting lineup.

The Seminoles are led by star Freshman F Jonathan Isaac. Isaac is a former 5 star recruit and is expected to be a NBA Lottery Pick come June. He is averaging 15 PPG on 58% shooting as well as grabbing 7 boards a game. The ‘Noles also have two behemoths at center with the 7 foot 1 Michael Ojo and 7 foot 4 Christ Koumadje which should allow them to dominate on the glass.

Like the Colonials, FSU wins games on the boards and at the line. Both teams grab 39 boards and go to the line 27 time so expect this to be a physical game. FSU is far more athletic and is significantly bigger than GW and that will cause issues for the Colonials. If Jaren Sina can get going and play like he did in the UAB (where he hit 4 three pointers) then GW can keep it close, but ultimately I don’t believe they have the firepower to keep up with FSU.

FSU: 84

GW: 71
