GW Women beat Villanova, 72-69

By: Jack Linnehan

GW (3-1) was able to pull off a road victory Sunday afternoon in a barn-burner over Villanova (1-2), 72-69. Caira Washington led the Colonials with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and GW saw double digit scoring efforts from Hannah Schaible (15), Brianna Cummings (11), and Camilia Tapias (10).

Jannah Tucker paced the Wildcats with 21 points, and Megan Quinn added 18 on 3-4 shooting from 3-point range. Both teams hit a combined 17 3-pointers, which at times sparked runs for each team.

The first half was back and forth, with GW up by 1 at the end of the 1st quarter, and Villanova up 2 with just seconds to go. Washington hit a putback off a missed layup from Cummings to beat the buzzer, and at the half it was a tie game.

In the 3rd, GW put on a clinic from deep, led by Tapias and Kelli Prange. The hot shooting (4-6 from deep in the quarter) led the Colonials to a 7-point lead at the end of the quarter. Quinn and Adrianna Hahn hit some big 3’s for Villanova to cut the lead to a single possession twice, but clutch free throws down the stretch from Schaible and Shannon Cranshaw helped preserve the victory for GW.

“Whenever you have four guys in double figures and you’re sharing the ball, you know you’re doing well. I think they’re really getting to understand the pace that we want to play out, and how hard we can be to guard when we really move the basketball,” said Coach Rizzotti. “Villanova’s a really tough team to play defensively and I thought our girls did a great job in that second half of really adjusting and giving us a sizable lead to give us some cushion at the end.”

Next up for GW is the Gulf Coast Showcase, a 3-game tournament in Estero, FL. It kicks off Friday, November 25, with a showdown against #11 Syracuse. WRGW will not be able to broadcast this tournament, but you can stay up to date through our twitter feed (WRGW Sports) or right here at sports.gwradio.com.
