MBB beats Arkansas-Pine Bluff 61-41

By: Daniel Stettin

On a night where all 13 players played, GW (3-0) cruised to a 61-41 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-2). Tyler Cavanaugh led the way for the Colonials with 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 25 minutes of action. The Colonials never trailed, starting the game on a  8-2 run, with the lead getting as high as 25 after a 15-2 run to start the second half.

As usual, the Colonials dominated on the boards and at the line, out rebounding the Lions 55-32 as well as 30 more trips to the line. Offense came as a premium, with neither team shooting better than 35%. Both sides especially struggled behind the arc, combining to go 6-42. Turnovers were also a major issue once again with 19 and Freshman Forward Kevin Marfo committing 7 in just 14 minutes.

Justin Williams and Adam Mitola each made their GW debuts, with both going scoreless. The other 11 players all were able to find the score sheet and each played double digit minutes.

“It’s good to develop our bench. That was the main thing, I want to make sure our bench guys get some experience and have some depth going on into the Atlantic 10 season,” said Coach Joseph. “That’s what it’s all about, really developing our guys, developing that chemistry, facing adversity, it’s good to get those under our belt.”

Next up for the Colonials is a trip to Kansas City for the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, after the campus portion where the Colonials went 2-0. GW will face the Georgia Bulldogs of the SEC Monday night at 7 PM. On Tuesday, GW will face Kansas or UAB. WRGW will unfortunately not be broadcasting either of these game, but we will be keeping you updated through our Twitter feed (@WRGWSports) and here on sports.gwradio.com.
