GW Men’s Basketball vs Arkansas Pine-Bluff Preview 11/17/16

By: Jack Linnehan

The George Washington Colonials will face off tonight against the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions in the second of two campus matchups for the CBE Hall of Fame classic. The Golden Lions enter at 1-1, and are coming off an 83-47 victory over Division 2 Ecclesia College, after beginning the season with a 20-point loss to UAB.

The Colonials are 2-0 and fresh off a nail-biting victory over Siena, 77-75. GW looks to keep the momentum going and get another victory for rookie head coach Maurice Joseph before they head out to Kansas City for the second part of this tournament. As usual, Tyler Cavanaugh has been dominant for GW, averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds this season. GW has also found solid contributions from Yuta Watanabe (15.5 ppg and 9 rpg), Jaren Sina (12 ppg), and Collin Smith (9 ppg and 6 rpg); as well as improved bench play from last year.  Tremendous free throw shooting has been the main storyline for the Colonials, as they are 83% from the charity stripe so far this season.

The Golden Lions are led by senior Ghiavonni Robinson (16 ppg), but have not been able to find consistent scoring elsewhere. They’ll need to see more from guards Charles Jackson and Joe’Randle Toliver, who both scored over 10 points in the loss to UAB, if they want to have a shot at this game. GW has shown to be suspect on defense at times, so if the Golden Lions can get hot this could be another close game. However, I look for GW to get to the FT line early and often, as their strong shooting there will carry them to another victory.
