GW Men’s Basketball vs Siena Preview 11/15/16
By: Jonathan Rhone
Tonight’s game between the George Washington Colonials and the Siena Saints is the first of four games for the Colonials in the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic tournament. GW started the new season off on the right foot with a 75-71 win over Maryland Eastern Shore behind strong performances from veteran players Tyler Cavanaugh and Yuta Watanabe. The Colonials will hope for solid performances from those two again, as they continue to adjust to new Head Coach, Maurice Joseph. A win tonight would help this young team build confidence and develop winning habits.
GW’s opponent this evening, the Siena Saints, are coming off a comeback victory over Cornell this past weekend. The Saints overcame a slow start to down Cornell 89-78. Siena brings a unique mixture of experience and youth to the court this season. They are led by senior guard Marquis Wright. Siena enjoys playing a fast pace brand of basketball that could trouble the Colonials this evening. The key for them is keeping the turnovers down. The Saints are also looking to move to 2-0 on the season, and hope to improve upon a solid third place finish last year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Expect to see Watanabe guard Wright, who put up 31 points against Cornell. At 6 foot 9 his length could trouble Wright who only stands at 6 foot 1. Like GW, the Saints have a blend of veteran and young talent, starting 3 Seniors and 2 Freshman. With 6 players being from the DMV area, this will be a homecoming of sorts for Siena. If the Colonials can prevent the Saints from hitting their threes, they went 11-29 in the opener, I can see GW pulling this one out.
