7 PM, Charles E. Smith Center, Washington, DC
GW tips off their season tonight with an exhibition vs the Gannon Golden Knights. The Golden Knights finish their road trip this evening against the Colonials, they lost at Pittsburgh last night, 80-50. Gannon is a Dvision II program from Erie, PA. They were picked to finish fourth in the preseason Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Poll, and received votes in the National Associaction of Basketball Coaches Division II preseason poll.
Three Things to Watch
1. Debuts- Tonight marks the debuts of Tyler Cavanaugh, Matt Hart and Alex Mitola. Expectations vary for all three players but Cavanaugh and Mitola will need to be high impact players for GW to be a tournament team this year. Cavanaugh, a Wake Forest transfer, is expected to debut in the starting lineup tonight. Mitola and Hart will be contributing off the bench. All three players bring shooting to a team in dire need of spacing.
2. New Rules- The 30 second shot clock seemed to favor GW’s style of play last year, and with a whole off-season it will be interesting to see what Lonergan has implemented with this veteran team. The new layout of timeouts, the added emphasis of increased scoring and the widening of the restricted area should help improve the quality of basketball being played this year, and it all starts tonight.

3. Attendance- What will the fan turnout be for tonight’s game? It’s a Saturday night in the District, will the fans come out in flocks for the first real game action of the year? What’s the real hype level for this senior laden team coming off a NIT loss? It’ll be interesting to see the turnout but I have a pessimistic feeling that I may leave the arena disappointed with the attendance. Dearly hoping I am wrong though.
Game Prediction – GW 83- Gannon 58
Gannon shoots the ball well early on but the Colonials surge at the end of the first half and never look back. Newcomer Tyler Cavanaugh impresses in his debut, Larson shows good touch around the basket and McDonald’s jumpshot looks better than ever.
Reminder- Our first live broadcast will be next Friday vs Lafayette at 7 PM. Don’t miss our season preview arriving early next week
