The Colonials take on their second scheduled Big Ten opponent of the season when they make the trip up to State College to visit Penn State at Noon today. It is a matchup of streaking teams, with GW entering the contest having won three straight and the Nittany Lions coming in with seven straight wins.

Patricio Garino has been on a tear during the streak, averaging 21 points per game on 69 percent shooting during the last three games. Kevin Larsen seemed to snap out of his funk against major conference teams with 18 points and eight rebounds in GW’s home win over DePaul on Thursday night, earning Player of the Game honors. However, Kethan Savage will need to step up today after posting his worst game of the season against DePaul with six points on 1-9 from the field.

Penn State’s offense begins and ends with guard D.J. Newbill, who comes in averaging 22.1 points a game, good for first in the Big Ten and fourth nationally. Shep Garner also contributes on both ends of the court, making the battle in the backcourt the one to watch today.

Today marks the 30th all-time meeting between the Colonials and the Nittany Lions, with the last matchup taking place in the 1991 Palm Beach Classic, a 71-57 GW win. GW is 11-18 against Penn State, a fellow charter member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Today also marks the sixth all-time meeting between Mike Lonergan and Penn State head coach Pat Chambers. Both coaches faced off in America East play, when Lonergan was head coach at Vermont and Chambers helmed Boston University. Lonergan has won three of the five prior matchups, all in the 2009-10 season, while Chambers won the two games played during the 2010-11 campaign.

WRGW’s coverage begins at 11:50 am with tip off scheduled for Noon on gwradio.com.
