The Colonials will look to bounce back from Saturday’s heartbreaking loss in Newark as they return to Foggy Bottom to face winless UMBC. Kethan Savage scored 19 points in the loss to Seton Hall on Saturday and has finished in double-figures scoring in every game this season. However, his key turnovers in the final minute cost GW a chance to secure the lead and the win and he will have to cut down on those tonight and as the season progresses.
Yet, the main goal for Mike Lonergan and the coaching staff needs to be getting Kevin Larsen back on the right track. Larsen has scored in double-figures only twice thus far in five games, an early season drop off in a year in which he set his goal as becoming a consistent 18-10 player. He has yet to find any real consistency early on, which he will need to work on before they begin A10 play in January.
UMBC is led by guard Wayne Sparrow, a transfer from Richmond who has already faced GW four times in his career. Sparrow is averaging nearly 12 points per game is coming off a 12 point effort two nights ago in a road loss to UMES.
Thursday marks the ninth all-time meeting between GW and UMBC. The Colonials defeated the Retrievers 74-61 in their matchup last season at the Smith Center, a game in which Savage and Larsen combined for 29 points. WRGW’s coverage begins at 6:45 with tip off scheduled for 7 pm on gwradio.com.
