When the schedule came out a few months ago, this was a game that every fan circled because of the expectations for the Colonials coming into the season and the success of the Cavaliers last year, a season that culminated with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. The day is finally here as the Buff and Blue make the bus trip down to Charlottesville to face the ninth-ranked team in the country.

GW is coming off a road win at Big Ten newcomer Rutgers 70-53 last Sunday, a game in which they never trailed. The Colonials’ “core four” of Joe McDonald, Kethan Savage, Patricio Garino, and Kevin Larsen are all off to good starts, with each averaging in double-figures in scoring and combining to average 53 points on an efficient 52 percent shooting through two games. Yuta Watanabe has also provided a spark off the bench, averaging eight points a game and going 3-5 from beyond the arc.

This game is also notable for the reunions of high school teammates. McDonald played with Virginia forward Darion Atkins at Landon while Kevin Larsen and Virginia guard Justin Anderson played together at Montrose Christian. Anderson is Virginia’s team leader in scoring with 15.3 points per game on an impressive 10-16 from three-point land. Expect either Savage or Garino to draw the assignment on the 6’6″ Cavaliers sharpshooter early and often. The Colonials will also need to shut down guard Malcolm Brogdon and forward Anthony Gill in order to have a chance of pulling the road upset.

Tonight’s game marks the first time GW has faced Virginia since the 2004 Postseason NIT and the first regular season meeting since 1984. This is the first of a home-and-home series between the teams that will see Virginia make the trip to Foggy Bottom next season. The all-time series is tied 23-23, but a win for GW would be their first against the Cavaliers since January 1974.

WRGW’s coverage begins at 6:45 with tip off scheduled for 7 pm on gwradio.com.
