Assistant Director, News and Social Media

With the Fall Semester at GW starting in a couple of weeks, that can only mean one thing: the fall sports season is right around the corner. Over the next week and a half, we will be providing in-depth previews of GW Men’s and Women’s Soccer as well as GW Volleyball, all sports that we will be broadcasting right here on this season. However, those are not the only sports that will be in action this fall. Here is a little more of what you can expect in GW Athletics during the fall sports season:

Cross Country: Junior Marco Siragusa and Sophomore John Perrino lead a men’s team trying to improve upon last season’s 13th place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. On the women’s side, Julia Weir returns for her final season at GW attempting to also improve upon a 13th place team finish in 2011 under second year head coach Terry Weir.

Rowing: Trofym Anderson leads a men’s rowing squad that loses only two members of its varsity squad from 2011-12. The Colonials took a step in the right direction under head coach Mark Davis last season, with the Varsity 8 squad finishing fourth in the IRA National Championships, just five seconds behind winner Northeastern. The GW women, fresh off a second place finish at the Atlantic 10 championship last season under Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Eric Carcich, will strive to claim the title this year under the veteran leadership of Anna Kaminski, who rowed for the United States Under-23 national team at the World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania last month.

Sailing: After spending many years as a club program, GW Sailing under head coach John Pierce will embark on its inaugural collegiate season in both the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association and the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association in 2012-13 after officially becoming a varsity sport on July 1st. The Colonials will use the Potomac River as its home venue and will attempt to gain ground on crosstown rival Georgetown, who took home the ICSA/GILL Coed National Championship last season.

Swimming: The GW men will look to improve upon a 2011-12 season that saw them take sixth place at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a total of 401 points. The Colonials under head coach Dan Rhinehart will return many key contributors from last season, including senior Phillip Graeter, who finished second in the 200-yard backstroke at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and sophomore Adam Rabe, who finished second in the 200-yard breaststoke. As for the GW women, they return juniors Caroline Myers and Lindsay Moore to a squad that finished ninth at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a total of 233.5 points.

Tennis: The GW men enter the fall 2012 season as the defending back-to-back Atlantic 10 champion and are poised to battle for a third straight title under head coach Greg Munoz as they welcome back three key players from their 2011-12 campaign, including senior Alexander van Gils and juniors Viktor Svensson and Ulrik Thomsen. The GW ladies are looking to improve upon a successful 2011-12 season of their own that saw them finish 16-7 overall. Head coach Dawn Buth returns five players from last season and welcomes highly touted recruit Egle Jakuciunaite, ranked fourth in Lithuania by the Lithuanian Tennis Union, to Mount Vernon.

Men’s Water Polo: The Colonial men return 14 letterwinners from 2011’s team that finished with a record of 13-17, good for fifth place in the CWPA Southern Division under head coach Scott Reed. However, they will encounter one of their toughest schedules in recent years, with matches against 2011 national runner-up UCLA at the Princeton Invite on September 8th and defending CWPA Eastern Division champion Princeton at the Charles E. Smith Center on September 22nd, both as a part of doubleheaders.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting season for GW Athletics and Colonials Radio Central will have you covered from start to finish with all the latest news from Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon.
