Preview: GW at St. Bonaventure – Interview With SBU-TV’s Shannon Shepherd

Nkwa Asonye
Sports Director

To preview the A10 conference opener between GW and the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, I had a phone interview with SBU-TV men’s baskeball sideline reporter, Shannon Shepherd. The senior from Ashburn, VA was also the sports director of WSBU, St. Bonaventure’s campus radio station for the past three years.

She also has a series with SBU’s student-athletes called “Out of Bounds”. You can access it right here: http://gobonnies.com/gennews/Out_Of_Bounds

Raynell Cooper and I have the call tonight…pre-game show starts a little earlier today at 6:40pm.

The Week In Interviews: October 10th-15th

Last week seemed as if it would be pretty dormant…but that all changed on Thursday.

That morning, Sports Director Nkwa Asonye and Assistant Sports Director Tim Riordan took a red-eye train to the Atlantic 10′s men’s basketball media day in Brooklyn, New York.  It was there that the pre-season rankings and all-conference teams were announced.  For George Washington, the Colonials were picked to finish eighth in the conference and senior guard Tony Taylor was selected for the all-conference first team. Both guys put together a news package which aired on WRGW News at 6 that day.

During the allotted media time, Tim spoke with head men’s basketball coach Mike Lonergan about his outlook for the season.

In a separate interview, Commissioner Bernadette McGlade offered some words on conference expansion as it relates to the A10.

We were also able to catch up with ESPN college basketball analyst Andy Katz, and he offered his perspective on the Colonials’ upcoming season under Lonergan.

After our coverage of Colonials Invasion on Friday, Saturday took a different turn.  For the DC vs. Philly NBA Lockout Exhibition, WRGW District Radio was the exclusive provider of the radio call as Nkwa Asonye, sophomore Ben Silverstein, and General Manager Emeritus Jamie Benson ’10 made the trip to Coolidge High School.

Both teams exchanged trash talk in the coming weeks, but riding the hot hand of Philadelphia 76ers guard Lou Williams – whose 53 points were second to only to the game-high 56 from Team D.C.’s Kevin Durant – Team Philly had the last laugh in a back-and-forth 174-167 win.  For Team D.C., Washington Wizards point guard John Wall scored 38 points and chipped in four assists despite missing the first quarter.

Portland Trailblazers rookie Nolan Smith, who played his high school career at Oak Hill Academy, scored 19 points on seven of ten shooting. He granted a quick interview after the game.

WPGC 95.5 FM radio personality Big Tigger was the unofficial coach for Team D.C. and although his team lost, he enjoyed the experience on the sideline.

During the game, the guys sat next to Washington Post NBA Columnist Michael Lee and TNT basketball analyst David Aldridge, who was gracious enough to offer his thoughts on the game and the NBA Lockout.

Reactions from BB&T Classic Press Conference

Nkwa Asonye
Sports Director

Three out of the four coaches in this year’s BB&T Classic were present at the press conference this afternoon. Coach Shaka Smart of VCU, unfortunately, could not be there due to a family emergency. My news piece on Coach Lonergan and the tournament aired today on WRGW News at 6.

I also got a chance to talk to Coach Lonergan afterward…and yes, there WILL be contests at Colonial Invasion next week.

And no conversation about the BB&T would be complete without Washington Post columnist John Feinstein, one of the most influential individuals involved. For the record, it was he who first revealed at WRGW’s Mid-Major Madness last April that the Colonials would be taking on the VCU Rams in the Classic. This is what he had to say about this year’s coaching field.

The Week In Interviews: September 12th-16th

Last week, programming kicked off with a bang for the 2011-2012 year.  On Wednesday, “AAA Sports” debuted onto the airwaves.  Michael Schottey, Asociate NFL Editor from Bleacher Report called in to offer his commentary on a crazy first NFL week.

Thursday was a big day for “Half-Jewish Sports,” as WRGW’s longest running sports show turned the big 2-1 with its first episode of the new campaign…and celebrated with a phone interview with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade who chimed in about the realigning landscape of college athletics.

The day after, “Box Out!” made its season debut hosting a double-header of interviews. One was with former GW men’s soccer standout Andy Stadler ’10, who’s currently playing professionally in Sweden and has adjusted well as one of the league’s better players.

The other interview that day was a real treat as Sports Illustrated baseball columnist Tom Verducci called in to talk about the coming end to the MLB season.

We’ll be posting interviews weekly of all of our on-air guests, so stay updated to the blog and keep listening to WRGW!
